Project overview

The Town of Port Hedland (Town) is developing an Economic Resilience and Recovery Plan to strengthen the region’s capacity to respond to and recover from a significant economic disruption.

We know doing business in the Town of Port Hedland can be challenging at the best of times due to structural constraints in the housing and labour markets. In the event of a major disaster such as a cyclone, strong coordination between local, state and federal governments, industry bodies and the business community will be essential. The Town has established plans for disaster preparedness and immediate post-event response, including protecting human safety and restoring critical infrastructure. However, limited work has been undertaken to plan for and support economic recovery, which can often take months or years after a disaster occurs.

The Economic Resilience and Recovery Plan will provide a clear and practical framework to guide economic recovery following a significant disaster event that disrupts local businesses, industries and employment. It is intended to cover areas such as coordinating advocacy for disaster recovery funding, targeted support for affected businesses, and investment in infrastructure and initiatives that strengthen long term economic resilience and enable faster recovery.

Effective support mechanisms will help business owners and service providers re-establish operations quickly, ensuring the timely restoration of services and amenities that underpin the liveability of the Town for residents.
